Intended for a Definite Purpose
The online dictionary www.dictionary.com assigns the following definition to the word design: to intend for a definite purpose.
If we follow the argument God pre-determines our existence before birth and intends us for a definite purpose, how do we figure out the specifics?
Chris Russell, an American, has good thoughts on the subject even though he is an evangelical pastor. Not that I am against American evangelicals, except they are so evangelical. I guess I’m more used to Canadian evangelicals—quiet and apologetic on their faith; but at least they talk, not like most mainstream conservative churchgoers. In Canada you can work with someone twenty-five years and never know they attend church on Sundays. But Chris Russell has no issue talking about finding God’s purpose for our lives.
I appreciate where Chris says: “God has created you to fulfill a specific role in this world. There is no one else who can achieve completely what God has purposely created you to do.” http://www.biblestudytools.com/blogs/chris-russell/8-keys-to-knowing-god-s-will-for-you
Talk about special.
Pay Attention to the Wiring, It Has a Definite Purpose
Chris makes useful points; ways to tap into God’s mindset when attempting to figure out our purpose. What strikes me most is his citation to “pay attention to how God has wired you.” This resonates because after a long business career I am now travelling an uncharted road as a writer.
I trace the first stirrings to my childhood when sitting at a small desk in a small bedroom. I remember my mother entering my room curious as to why she hadn’t seen me in a while.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Writing a story,” I responded returning her smile. So enthralled with the tropical island adventures in the Disney book The Swiss Family Robinson I started writing a novel. “Do you want to hear what I’ve written?”
I remember my mother’s smile as I read back my scribbling. “It sounds a bit like the book you are reading,” she commented.
It was but a start to my love of words and stories with the preliminary wiring in place and evident.
Knowing of our own leanings, the things we gravitate towards that are natural, are the first clues in the discovery of purpose. Inclinations, however, get stuffed away or knocked about as other life necessities clamour for attention. But if they persist in our consciousness they become beacons of light illuminating a dark path – prompts heralding us to journey in discovery of our purpose.
God has a path she wants us to take to bring forth the gifts we hold. And when we follow the path nothing is as exciting as being alive and whole in fulfilling our reason for being.
