Fear Displaces God’s Presence

We are a global family yet how do we navigate this new world order and bring food to the table? There is no easy answer; no quick fix or magic formula. The government can’t guarantee a job; they can only encourage companies through incentives to invest in local infrastructure. The companies must still be competitive to stay viable.

As robotics and offshore labour replace local North American human capital – companies are doing more with less. Perhaps in ways not envisioned the need for retraining will increase to meet the needs of an ever-expanding technological and information age. Until this next evolutionary phase settles the re-shuffling remains uncomfortable.

We cannot avoid the pain of a global paradigm shift nor should we deny it. Rather than balk, wiser to travel through it – perhaps ultimately to discover it is the path of least resistance. Building walls of protectionism, like the US-Mexico wall recently decreed by executive order of the newly elected US President Donald Trump will only make things worse – isolation from the things that help to evolve a new society.

You Are A Dangerous Trap To Me

The bible warns of this trap. When the disciple, Peter, tries to unwittingly talk Jesus out of pursuing his ordained path to Jerusalem (leading to his eventual death and resurrection) Jesus harshly rebukes him:

“Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” Mathew16:23 (NIV).

Peter’s fear displaces God’s presence. He wants to isolate Jesus to protect him. But Jesus knew he had to travel a painful path in order for new life to flourish. So it is with our current world. So it is with our lives. We must give up an old life to gain a new.

The days of fortress and castle building are gone – although many still choose to believe it the world without is not our enemy. It is fear within that is our enemy. Our security lies not in our changed circumstances but in our changed mindset – it lies within where the hope of God’s will for the world resides. It isn’t what we expected but ultimately it is better.

To be continued in the next post.

What painful path have you travelled in order for new life to flourish?
